Successional trajectories of seed dispersal mode and seed size of canopy tree species in wet tropical forests

چکیده
Despite the critical role of seed dispersal for tree colonization during forest succession in wet tropical forests, successional trajectories modes are poorly documented at community level. Overall trends forests indicate that, over time, animal-dispersed and large-seeded species increase relative abundance woody vegetation, whereas wind-dispersed small-seeded decline. Increased trees may be attributed to higher rates deposition by animals survival with larger seeds (diaspores) compared species. We compiled categorical information on size (maximum length) mode (anemochory, autochory, or zoochory) 240 canopy six naturally regenerating (11–45 years since abandonment pasture) two old-growth lowland northeastern Costa Rica. evaluated among classified as second growth old specialists, generalists based data these plots. Further, we long-term seed-size profile seedlings, saplings, ≥5 cm dbh using annual vegetation survey from 1997 2013. Seed was significantly associated mode, which driven anemochorous intermediate 6 mm 15 autochorous large >15 mm. Dispersal exhibited clear directional trajectories, decreasing anemochory increasing zoochory. Zoochorous seedlings showed than seedlings. Species ≤ decreased through succession, while increased within seedling sapling communities. Seedlings smaller second-growth forests. The study further demonstrates importance traits, such size, assembly regrowth, frugivorous this process. different classes can a useful indicator recovery biodiversity interactions regions.

Endozoochorous seed dispersal of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands
During last two decades studies on endozoochorous seed dispersal indicated that a large numbers of plant seeds are potentially dispersed and suceefully germinated via animal dung. However, very little is known about the relative importance of endozoochory in germination success of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content, seed deposition p...

Seed dispersal increases local species richness and reduces spatial turnover of tropical tree seedlings.
Dispersal is thought to be a key process underlying the high spatial diversity of tropical forests. Just how important dispersal is in structuring plant communities is nevertheless an open question because it is very difficult to isolate dispersal from other processes, and thereby measure its effect. Using a unique situation, the loss of vertebrate seed dispersers on the island of Guam and thei...
